Dover Castle

Dover Castle, located in Kent, England, is one of the country’s most iconic and historically significant fortresses. Known as the “Key to England,” this medieval castle has played a crucial role in the defense of the country for over 900 years.

The castle’s strategic position atop the White Cliffs of Dover provided a perfect vantage point for monitoring the English Channel, making it a vital defensive site against invasions from mainland Europe. Originally built by William the Conqueror in the 11th century, Dover Castle has undergone numerous expansions and fortifications over the centuries, particularly during the reign of Henry II, who added a magnificent Great Tower.

In addition to its medieval history, Dover Castle also played a significant role during World War II. The network of tunnels beneath the castle was transformed into a military command center, where the famous Dunkirk evacuation was planned.
